Welcome to the ABV Cannonball Podcast. Where we discuss all things on two wheels, the adventure by Cannonball and other motorcycle-related nonsense.
SPEAKER_04Season four, episode 10. Welcome to Adventure Cannonball Podcast. I am your host, Taylor Lawson, and today I am joined by a Pacific Northwest real estate mogul, better known to you as Aaron Puffall. Aaron, welcome to the show.
SPEAKER_03That is not true. That is the biggest lie we've ever said on this podcast.
SPEAKER_04And boy, we've said some lies. This is now that's the first. You meant to say that's the first lie.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I mean, yes, we're totally transparent and honest. But it's good to see you, man. Even though you're So hold on, hold on.
SPEAKER_04Would you care to explain why you had such an introduction?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So we have this little apartment and we're trying to sell it because the market is is really soft. And uh and we had sold basically headquarters in um in Port Angeles for a bunch of reasons. And we're just trying to move into uh another apartment essentially because to take advantage of the soft market. But the problem with being poor is people treat you like you know, you're fresh out of high school and you're in a CarMax lot because so we're like, we're gonna sell this apartment and here's the listing, and we'd like to buy this other apartment when this one sells. And they're like, our counteroffer is we'll take your deposit, but if anyone comes with any offer, we're gonna tell you to go kick rocks, you loser. And I'm like, I just so sick of being treated like you know, a second rate citizen. Like, my money is good, and here's the listing, and it's priced to sell. I'm like, so it's been a rough weekend trying to, you know, trying to sell our apartment and move into a different one. That's all.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, uh, fair enough. Well, just for the record, it's good to in a down market, it's good to trade up. And in an up market, it's good to trade down. So at least you go in the right direction.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and it's not even that. We just we just don't like where we live. This apartment is essentially made of wood, and I've never lived in an apartment before. So I hear this devil child that lives upstairs. My wife insists that I can't go break her little legs. You cannot. No, she's she says it's frowned upon.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna support your wife in this decision.
SPEAKER_03It would be easy. They're so small, right? But this this so wrong. This monster runs around, right? And these parents with this freaking soft parenting. My little girl, she's such a darling, she can run around and jump off the couch. I'm like, I was, you know, I wasn't allowed to do anything. Never mind, run around the house. Uh, you know, I would get my head smashed in if I jumped off the couch, right? And we lived in a house. Can you like there were no neighbors? Right. So, anyway, so we're out of here. So I'm not moving for the glamour of it. I'm moving because I'm gonna take a shotgun and blow the roof out of this place if this monster runs around again. But, anyways, I digress.
SPEAKER_04You do. Well, it's it's tough to live below a you know, a uh it's like uh domestic terrorism at its best.
SPEAKER_03It it is, and it really is. And and anyways, I've had enough, as you can tell. I'm a bit passionate about it, but I need to get the F out of here.
SPEAKER_04Fair enough.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I'm gonna open this beer because now I need to be got me fired up.
SPEAKER_04I got you fired. Well then good. That's where you need you fired up for this podcast, buddy. Okay, so um, what are you drinking?
SPEAKER_03I'm having a backcountry brewing trailbreaker, hazy pale ale. So cheers, bro. Nice. Oh, Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that that was that was messy, bro. That went that went everywhere. It happens. It happens. I'm drinking a uh a Steag Berry It's it means uh mountain trail. Steag, Steag means like you know, Steag trail and Barry Barry B-E-R-G means mountain. So the the mountain trail. So Steag Berriet's albatross, and it's a NEPA, any IPA 7%. What is what's a NEPA?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. Northeast IPA, maybe? I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Northeast IP Oh, you're good.
SPEAKER_03New England IPA, maybe.
SPEAKER_04New England IPA, Nipa. Okay, fair enough. All right.
SPEAKER_03That's odd though that we both have uh oh, nice one. We both have beers very good. Uh that uh are named in the same uh in the same philosophy. Uh mine's uh trailbreaker, has a picture of uh of an old school oil lamp, and yours is uh talking about mountain mountain trails.
SPEAKER_04Not bad. Not bad. Who knew? We and this was not coordinated. We don't coordinate anything. Dear listener, it's time for you to crack your drink. Although Aaron and I are gonna do our best to can make this one fairly short. Aaron, why is this one shorter than normal?
SPEAKER_03Because we don't have an interview today, and it's just a cruise show. That's why. Well done. We had tried it, we had tried to do an interview, uh, but we had some technical issues. So uh we're gonna redo it, and uh that'll be next week's episode.
SPEAKER_04All right, very cool. Um, so I want to talk about our world ranking in the world of adventure motorcycling podcasts, and I've got some fairly shocking news to share with you. Do you know what it is?
SPEAKER_03We are finally number one, but you're gonna tell me that we're number one in I don't know, the Isle of Sky in Scotland on Tuesdays or something.
SPEAKER_04Wednesdays. Um, but no, actually, actually, the truth is that we are slipping, we're teetering on falling into position three.
SPEAKER_03Listen, might as well listen. I live in a second-rate apartment. We might as well just go right down the to the third tier. But dear listener, if you want to help us, please, you know, forward this to somebody so so we can get back into number two. I'd appreciate it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so that little box, what's that little box with an arrow out of the top of it? Is that the box that needs to be?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's the Apple one the Apple share box.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Oh, that's right. There are there are devices out there that aren't Apple. I forgot.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, there are some people in the worse predicament than I am.
SPEAKER_04Imagine that. But I do want to say that you said you had a second rate apartment. And if I understand that correctly, that's number two.
SPEAKER_03That's true. My whole life, number two. Number two, baby. I just had a morning number two. I live in a number two apartment apartment. It is just a big pile of number two.
SPEAKER_04Thank God there's thank God that you get a chance to edit this.
SPEAKER_03That's oh, we're not editing anything. I've nothing coming out of this. We're a raw dogness. It's all it's a cruise show, baby.
SPEAKER_04That's so wrong. That's so wrong.
SPEAKER_03It's cannibal. You know, it's funny because I had done a couple of interviews with the ADV, what's it called? Uh ADV writer people. And I did an interview with uh Sport Touring magazine. Yeah. And they both immediately started with, you know, Cannibal. It's supposed to be like, you know, like Cannibal Baker, like see the see the shining sea, you know, supposed to be a little bit illegal. And, you know, our motto is like unsanctioned and unafraid. It's, you know, don't die. Right. It's a little tongue-in-cheek, right? Yeah. So, you know, I think we need to embrace that motto. I think that, you know, although you sign a contract that says you have to follow all the rules, an adult, I mean all the laws, uh, right, you know, I believe we should be a little, a little bit, you know, vagabond-ish, you know?
SPEAKER_04A little on the edge. Well, look, you know, the good news is that you got two rallies to pick from now. And we've got some guy. We got one guy, he's doing both. He signed up for both US and Europe right away.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. And he's already um checked on the shipping for his bike. He contacted Kathy at Moto Freight. So we got some feedback on current rates. That was good. Just as an aside, I encourage anyone who is going to the European rally from another place to make a trip of it. Uh, ship your bike, don't rent one. Please ship your bike, don't rent one, you're gonna love it, and bookend the rally with adventure. So the rally ends in uh Skagen, Denmark, and go north, go to land's end, excuse me, Norway, or go over to the British Isles, or go over to uh Eastern Europe or something. But but don't just go there and ship your bike back. Take a month, you know, or just do what I'm doing. Just leave your bike there. Or leave it, yeah. Yeah, Kathy at Motor Freight, I think she charges like 50 pounds a month or something. Yeah, like it's nothing. Like just leave your bike there if you're gonna do other rallies there. So um, yeah, that's exactly what I'm gonna do. So I encourage everyone, if you are going to that rally, uh bookend it with some adventure.
SPEAKER_04And 50 pounds a month is really only like buying two beers at a microbrew in Norway.
SPEAKER_03Probably less.
SPEAKER_04Probably cheaper than that. That's true.
SPEAKER_03You remember that? It was outrageously expensive to beer.
SPEAKER_04I remember you came back, you came back with these two, I don't know, half a liter. They were little beers, they weren't even like 33 centiers, so a third of a yeah, they're a third of a pint of a uh a liter. And you came back and I and I and uh they were great. I mean, it was this amazing microbrew in Oslo. And you came back and I was like, okay, well, that's ridiculous. It was like, I think they were like 25 US dollars a piece.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And I went over there and I was like, let me just try something different. And I picked something else and I came back and it was$30. That's outrageous. It's nuts, absolutely nuts.
SPEAKER_03But some of the most amazing riding, and you know, traveling on a budget, you can get a uh a bacon wrapped hot dog for like two euros at every gas station and just grab a couple of beers from the Vinda plot or whatever it's called. And uh all the campsites are amazing. So uh you just gotta change your change your tact a bit. Unless you're a baller, then you can then you can go do keg stands at the local microbrewery if you got the cash.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, fair enough. True. Um, so this is kind of funny. The other day when I was walking back from work, I thought we'd share this on the uh on the podcast. So I'm I'm walking back from work and I call Aaron. So I'm walking from this business complex near this massive mall of Scandinavia, biggest mall in Scandinavia, and I work across the street from it, which means that there's great places to go to lunch. So I'm walking out, it's cold. It's been on average about it's been the coldest winter in Sweden since 2010, and it's been about 10 degrees Fahrenheit on average, so it's cold. And uh which is good because everything stays frozen and white, so it's kind of it makes it pretty and then it's bright because there's not a lot of sunshine here. Although today was full sun, but there's not a lot of light here. The sun isn't up very long, is really what I mean, um in Sweden, and especially in northern Sweden. So I'm walking out, chatting with Aaron on the phone about something, God knows what, and I walk by this this T, this Santa Ray 700 that I see almost every day sitting there, at least in the days that I'm there. And uh I walk up and I'm I'm like turning on my camera to show to turn around, and this dude walks out. And so we put him on uh put him on camera, start interviewing the guy. And he he um he didn't actually know about the cannonball, shockingly. What?
SPEAKER_03How's that possible?
SPEAKER_04Can you believe it? But we you know, but we fixed that. So I'm gonna drop some stickers on this bike next week.
SPEAKER_03And uh did you do like a can I talk to you about your T7's extended warranty while you're at it?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and while and while you're here, yeah, exactly exactly. But he had uh he had some he had like uh Kendig big blocks, some some kind of big ass knobby tire. And then he said, Yeah, there's a guy in town who put the studs in for you because they drill them and then screw them in. They have a tool for it. And then he said, But I put extra ones in. And he had this like it looked like he'd be good, you know, just to ride on ice, you know, just go out and tear up the ice. Um, and then I talked to my buddy Sven, and Sven's like, dude, it's not the cold that's a problem. It's the when you get your bike back, and at the end of the year, it's nothing really left of it because the salt on the road ate it.
SPEAKER_03Oh, right. That's interesting.
SPEAKER_04Just as a shout out to Sven, he's actually the other day he contacted me and he said, So um, how do you want the switching work? Because he said, Come on over to my garage. He's the one who helped me troubleshoot my uh my tank situation where I couldn't get my fuel gauge working, and it ended up being the entire display that they replaced. So anyway, but he's got six or seven bikes in his garage. Um, he'll probably call me and so no Taylor, it's five, he got that wrong. Um great guy. But he's got it in like in in uh in town, like right in town, it's got this this massive bay, this workshop bay. So anyway, we'll go in there and we'll we'll um the pieces he told me what to order, and I ordered these pieces, so we're gonna put double foils for the hand, because my my uh my hand warmers aren't very warm, the the factory ones from Yamaha. So he's like, no, you gotta have double foils in there. Anyway, so he's gonna set me up with the right stuff.
SPEAKER_03You're gonna be able to cook some uh some meat on your hand, on your handlebars. If you pull into the canvas site, turn up the maximum, you're gonna wrap some bacon around there and cook bacon on your on your handlebars.
SPEAKER_04Just chew on my handlebars as opposed to having to go to the stop and shop. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_03Actually, if I remember correctly, it was always the Circle K that had the best hot dogs.
SPEAKER_04Circle K, man. We we were living on those things. And there was fuel stops everywhere in Norway, man. There's like just so well on the infrastructure and the roads were amazing. Unbelievable price.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I I diverge. Yeah. I had a segment in here called Tech Talk. And I uh what what I had planned to do, so we got a message from Dave from the 2025 cannonballers on that chat, which is still going strong. I love it. It's been it's provided me with so much entertainment this past year and and and uh and still going on.
SPEAKER_03They were not nice to me this morning. Someone had made an AI-generated image, a Valentine's Day image, with I don't know, me as fruity as you can get with a T7 in the background with hearts on it. I'm like, they they are not nice to me.
SPEAKER_04Dude, that wasn't AI. That was just a picture of you.
SPEAKER_03That's true. Guilty.
SPEAKER_04You just got caught.
SPEAKER_03You just got caught. That's all. Listen, we're all inclusive here, man. It's all good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but you know what's there was a T up for what's coming in when you're the um when you're the leprechaun on the 17th of March.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04That was certainly will not be kind. That will not be kind.
SPEAKER_03Listen, I I told them I'm gonna fix them. I'm gonna stick a checkpoint in the middle of the night on the edge of a cliff in Moab. I'm like, this is what you guys get. Every time you you you poke the bear, the bear strikes back.
SPEAKER_04That's right. That's right. Actually, now I understand what you meant by that. Right. No, if I I've grabbed, thanks for explaining it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, okay, good. Um anyway, so Dave, uh Dave, who did that rally, he was this morning, he's chatting. He's like, has anyone has anyone test ridden or has anyone know anything about the 1300 uh GSA, the 2026? And then like hours later, it comes back, he's like, I bought a 1300 GSA 2026. He's like, Did you know it's automatic? And I was like, Yeah, I um uh when I went to the uh the uh Stockholm motorcycle day, you can go test ride everything that they've got. They um uh VJ rode one of those and he came back, he goes, It was life to ride to ride one that was automatic. That's interesting, yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's kind of like getting on your first electric bike. I'm like, oh, that kind of makes sense. It's really easy.
SPEAKER_04Or your first in a big wheel.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I'd say, yeah. Hey, oh take care beer here.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And um, I have on I'll mention that I went parts shopping for my cove 450. That's that's on its way. So I haven't even seen it, but I got a guy in India who's doing custom livery for it. So we've been working on that. And uh nice guy. I ordered a rally tower. What else I ordered a shorty, shorty clutch.
SPEAKER_04Nice. Is the CNC the nice CNC one?
SPEAKER_03No, it's whatever is from it's called Uncle Wang's shop. It's uh a Chinese shop that makes uh aftermarket parts for Cove. So if if you're in the Cove world, you know Uncle Wang's, anyways. And then what was interesting is that I was on Alibaba, not AliExpress, but Alibaba, because I we used to have an import company where I would design camping equipment. It was called Expedition Research, anyways. And then since the trade war, you know, we just closed business. So, but I was on there because I have access to that platform and I was ordering some, you know, the rugs they have under motorcycles, the cool custom-made mats. Do you know what I'm talking about, Taylor?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like in the garage, so they don't yeah, so that they don't you know spill oil on your on your floor. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So I had designed a couple of them. I ordered some samples, and I just happened to see Cove motorcycles on that, you know, industry trading website. And they're like$3,000. The bikes. The bikes. So that's what they cost to buy. So the challenge would be getting the MSO. And then unfortunately, for you live in America, paying the tariff. But if you lived somewhere else and you understood how to deal with an MSO, MSO is a manufacturer, I don't think, statement of origin or something like that.
SPEAKER_04Statement of origin.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So that's what you take the DMV and uh or your version of it. But if you know how to do import export and all that stuff, you could potentially get a cove right out of the factory for like 3,000 bucks. You know, so that's cool. Yeah, and that's what they cost. Understanding more of the cove story, which I kind of has been digging into. So the engine that they use is used by a bunch of motorcycles.
SPEAKER_04It's a KTM motor, right? Same.
SPEAKER_03This whole conversation of, oh, it's Chinese and this and that. Dude, my my iPhone is Chinese. The the the DJ action cam I'm looking for is Chinese. The road podcasting studio I'm using right now is Chinese. So there's no more discussion. Like I used to have a a Sirtao 650 BMW. That engine is Chinese, right? Right. So this conversation is over. There are cheap things out of China, but this Cove motorcycle is is is really good. And it just happens to be made in China, right?
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_03So, anyways, uh, I thought that that discovery was was interesting, that you can buy yourself a container of of Cove motorcycles for, you know,$3,000 each, which which would be fun if you if you had a bunch of money.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And also with the same thing. So I want to just want to explain. So AliExpress is for retail buyers, right? Correct. And then Ali and Alibaba is for people who are buying in in volume.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, correct. Yeah. So what I used to do was when we had expedition research in 2008, we started that company as a side hustle. And so I had designed some camp ultralight camping or moto camping stoves, and they're made of titanium. And as you know, there ain't much titanium in North America. Unfortunately, that's just the way it is. So we would manufacture in China and then they would ship them to us and we would sell them on Amazon. Because, you know, I don't want to work in a factory. I like working behind my computer. So if you like your dream of uh bringing manufacturing back, go ahead and work in the factory if you'd like. But I don't want to, yeah. So I want to make more money and not work on a factory. It's not for me. But if that's your dream, go for it. Yeah. So that's what we used to do is we used to design, invent new products, have them manufactured, and then send over and sell them on Amazon. And we did that until last year. And then that's when we decided to sell the we we called it the barn, but with the we we we decided to sell headquarters essentially because the the business was no longer viable. But it is nice having that resource to order things uh from China directly at manufacturer's price. So that's how I discovered that uh that interesting thing about Cove.
SPEAKER_04So basically you're saying anybody who wants to buy 10 of them, they should contact you. No, no, don't contact me. No, no, no, don't contact me. No, no, not me. That's it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. Please don't contact me.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04All right. Let me shift gears a minute here. And let me ask you about, yeah. You like that? You like that? That was good.
SPEAKER_03That was that's that's nice.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, thanks for thanks for catching that. Um, chasing legends on the podcast trail. Indeed. So tell me, you got an update? What's going on? Hard copy, soft copy.
SPEAKER_03I hired this company to do like the cover and the formatting stuff, and I never should have done that. I should have just done it myself. So every time there's a change, they're based in New Zealand. So there's 24 hours anytime there's even a message. So I regret doing that. But, anyways, we're getting there. The print version should be out in 15 days. Uh, the ebook version should also be about 15 days. We're very close to having it done. It is a freaking slog, man. I tell you, it is tough doing all this. It's harder than you think. And then the audiobook is really interesting because I hired this awesome dude who's out of Tennessee, and he is studying all of the subjects in the book and is changing his accent. He's basically voice acting each uh subject in the book. Cool. So that won't be done until the middle of April, but it's worth the wait because it's going to be really, really awesome. So uh, so yeah, and then also we're waiting for you. We're waiting for. You, Taylor, because you wrote the foreword. And uh I understand you've booked some studio time in Stockholm to do a professional reading of the foreword.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Um Wednesday, I'll be in there and I will. Yeah, I mean, they actually it takes about three minutes to read the script, um, to read the forward. But I think it's um, as you said, the guy who's coming be, you know, the guy who's actually doing the book, his studio is going to be 10 out of 10. And the studio that I'm sitting in right now is probably an eight out of ten, but uh it would definitely know there be a difference of in the quality. So I'll go in the studio in the big fancy one, and uh we'll have some professional sound people sitting behind me and we'll get it sorted.
SPEAKER_03Nice. Do you want to practice it? Do you have it in front of you? Do you want to give the the listeners a list? If it's crap, we can edit it. But uh, do you want do you want to practice it now? Put you on the spot?
SPEAKER_04No pressure. Hang on a second. Let me let me let me let me let me get my singing voice on. Hang on.
SPEAKER_03That is a very odd ritual you have there before you read. I'm not gonna describe to the I'm I may not be allowed to describe on public airwaves what you just did to prepare.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you know, don't. I mean, but you know, I'll put everything back on in a little bit.
SPEAKER_03Little OCD. Hey, listen, painter's got to paint, baby. Never question an artist.
SPEAKER_04Don't question. Do not question it. Here we go. You're supposed to say, the forward performed by That's not me, man. Okay, forward to Chasing Legends on the Podcast Trail by Taylor Lawson, read by Taylor Lawson. The trajectory of a life is often decided at the dinner table. In 2002, at a small Italian restaurant off the 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale, I was introduced to a young Canadian captain who had just entered the industry. Aaron was eight years my junior. In fact, you still are. But he already possessed never a combination of competence and charisma required to survive the high-stakes world of private yachting. I did not know then that our meeting would forge a friendship lasting nearly twenty-five years. For decades, Aaron operated at the highest level of service and logistics. He was more than a yacht captain. For billionaires, royal families, and heads of state around the world, he served as a fixer, event architect, and the invisible hand ensuring their extraordinary lifestyles ran without a hitch. He spent his career anticipating the needs of people who expected perfection as a baseline. Whether he was navigating a 50-meter vessel through a tight Mediterranean port or managing complex operations on an aspen estate, Aaron was the man behind the curtain making the impossible look effortless. Aaron called me in Stockholm with a scenario that only Aaron could find himself in. He had meticulously organized an elite motorcycle expedition for his employer, featuring legendary guest riders, featured in this book, and a private rock band, also with a private chef for that week, Amazing Food. When the pandemic forced his guests to cancel, he was left with a four-bay garage full of BMW 1250 GSAs and no one to ride them. Come on now, what kind of friend would I be if I didn't book a ticket and fly over to help you?
SPEAKER_03We can always count on you in a pinch, buddy.
SPEAKER_04You know me, baby. There I am, right there for you. So I booked a ticket and I flew to Colorado to help him empty that garage. As we crested the highest passes in the Rockies, I realized that Aaron was simply applying his professional discipline to his personal passion. He does not just go for a ride. He scouts the distances, vets the restaurants and the wine list, and manages every variable to ensure the experience is flawless. This book is a result of that same relentless pursuit of excellence. Aaron did not wait for a publisher to give him permission to tell these stories or a huge budget to drop from the sky to fund it. He recognizes that the story of adventure motorcycling was living in the memories of a few legends, and he decided to capture it. He approaches these interviews with the same intensity he used to manage billionaire states. He researched, he listened, and he found the red thread amongst the fifty years of world travelers. The people in these pages have survived mechanical failures, hostile borders, and total isolation. And by that I mean jail. They understand that the real journey begins with when the logistics fail. Aaron has distilled their wisdom into a guide for anyone looking to trade the safety of the shore for the uncertainty of the road. This is more than a collection of motorcycle stories. It is a reflection of a man who knows that whether you're on the bridge of a ship, the seat of a bike, or in the cockpit of an aircraft, the most important thing you can do is pay attention.
SPEAKER_03Wow. Well done, sir. Actually, uh, this is the problem with doing this, is because now that I've heard you read that, I never pointed out in the book about jail because Ted Simon was in jail in Brazil. Yeah. Jeremy was in jail in Syria, I think it was. Claudio was in jail twice. And then who was the other person in jail? Um Ted's uh sorry, uh uh Sam Monacom was in jail in uh is a terrifying story. His story in uh in Africa was terrifying if you read his book. So that's an interesting thread that I didn't pick up on is that four of those guys were in jail. And you know, I've been in jail. So, you know, there's uh there's five people right there that have been totally innocent, but uh uh by by the state. Um, well, Claudia wasn't so innocent, he did cross that border illegally. Hey now, hey now. No, he admits it in his BBC interview. He admits I I I snuck into wherever it was, Pakistan or something like that. But he also says, I will end that this discussion about political figures putting good people in jail illegally. He always said that if you end up in jail as a journalist, it means you're on to a good story.
SPEAKER_04That's true, very true. And um, before we leave that segment, I just wanted to say, should is it time to admit to everybody that you're actually recording from cell block H or keep it down over there, you mumbrose you boys.
SPEAKER_03Don't you know I'm a famous number two podcaster?
SPEAKER_04Don't you know? That's that's right right outside your cell. It says cell block. Cell block number two. There we go.
SPEAKER_03Cute gangster music.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. You got any rideouts to share?
SPEAKER_03I do. Uh it's an easy one. It's the John Quill Motel in Bisbee. And it's more than just a destination, it's Anchor Point for Adventure. And it's owned by Sterling Noreen and his girlfriend. And he appears in the book. And I've added it to Aaron's rideout. It's a bit of a destination. It's you have to go there purposefully. Yeah. Um, but it's worth it. Uh Sterling will come out and he'll give you some some tips where to ride. And uh, if you're lucky and if you're having a beer downtown in Old Bisbee, you may run across uh Bisbee's uh patron saint, the comedian Doug Stanhope.
SPEAKER_04Oh, cool, very cool. Um, and also from the actual interview with Sterling, there's lots of off-road stuff out there as well. It's not just on-road, there's tons on on-road, off-road. It's just sounds like a uh a riding Mecca, so it's worth a trip to get out there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and as a matter of fact, uh he and his wife have a rally. I think it's coming up, as a matter of fact. I think the rally is in the spring or even now. Anyways, they have our annual rally that you go there and you camp out in the back of the motel, and he's got all his favorite routes uh down there. And as a matter of fact, the 2027 America's rally will stop in Bisbee. There's a there's a pro tip listener. So we will start in Cabo, we'll rip up the Baja, then the free zone will stay in the free zone, and then we'll go across the panhandle a little bit after we party at the Baja ADV Garage. Nice shout out to uh Marco, and then we will pop into Arizona. And I haven't done the route yet, but I will uh collaborate with Sterling and we will do some awesome optional off-roading into Bisbee and out of Bisbee. And then we will, in the cruelty of an ADV cannonball, we will have to do massive slab day or days to go to the coast of Texas. And that's the magic of an ADV cannonball rally is that yeah, you can get your little 450 rally bike for the sand stage, but good luck when you're on the highway, baby.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, when you're out there crushing it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. I think that's the fun of this rally is there is no perfect weapon. And I love the passionate discussion. But, anyways, I digress. We're the John Quill Motel is great, and we will stop in that area in 27.
SPEAKER_04Just so listeners can know, that was the bullet point on our chat that had the least amount of words, and it took the longest to get through. Thanks, listen.
SPEAKER_03We're 33 minutes in, so this is gonna be a short cruise show.
SPEAKER_04Last time we said it was gonna be a short cruise show, it was an hour and a half.
SPEAKER_03No, no. We're gonna listen. If we just pause and get another beer, we know it's going off the rails.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. I'm about there, by the way.
SPEAKER_03Great beer, by the way. Yeah, I'm enjoying this.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, cheers to that. Albatross. Albatross? Yeah. Sometimes you it's good to have a a neep albatross around your neck.
SPEAKER_03That's nice.
SPEAKER_04I've had it worse than at least down your neck, huh?
SPEAKER_03Better better than a yoke of uh of uh bad news in a prison in uh in Africa, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's really true. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03God, I can't believe I missed that. Damn it. That's it. Cancel the release of the book. I got it canceled.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, start it, started to change again. You know, you can start your you can start your um your next book with an apology.
SPEAKER_03That's true.
SPEAKER_04A little housekeeping here. And then people don't want to go back and go, whoa, whoa, who why were they in jail?
SPEAKER_03Well, it's interesting you say that because even though I said I'm never writing another freaking book again, I'm starting to book guests. Actually, we could talk about that. So let's talk about uh future episodes.
SPEAKER_04All right, future episodes.
SPEAKER_03I'm crafting future episodes according to how I want the next book to go. So we have Adam coming up. He runs the channel Ride Through Japan, and he's an American expat married to a Japanese woman. He's the coolest dude ever. He makes good uh cinematic POV kind of uh motovlog uh in Japan, and he's trying to go to all 47 prefectures. So he's gonna be in the next book and the next episode coming out. Hold on.
SPEAKER_04Hold on. I'm not gonna pretend like I know what a prefecture is. I'm just gonna go, what's a prefecture?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's a province, it's a state. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Okay, thank you for that.
SPEAKER_03So uh, so in his story is a bit inspirational, and it ties into the same kind of inspiration as Bruce. Bruce is coming on the podcast. Uh, he is from Teapot One, uh YouTube channel, big channel in the UK, and he has a podcast, and he wrote around the world on a GSXR, a jigser. Nice, and he's got some also important lessons about why he did that and what he learned about going around the world. Nice. And then we have uh this great uh woman, uh Eagle on the Road. She's from Lithuania, and she's just an ADV badass in the community. And uh she's currently in Peru, and uh, we've talked a couple of times, and I'm waiting until she comes back to Europe uh so we can record properly. I've seen her on a few podcasts, and the quality just happens to be in there, and I'd like to prepare properly and tell her story appropriately with the proper amount of gravitas that it requires. Nice. Uh, and she has joined, she has stopped her traveling, and she has joined the Lithuanian Armed Forces. And so I'm really proud of that, and I want to uh convey that message. And then uh as a counterbalance to all that inspirational story telling, uh, we have Stewie MK.
SPEAKER_04Stewie MK.
SPEAKER_03He's he's my spirit guide, he's my spirit animal because uh he was referred to us from Robert Bollinger.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_03And when he sent me the one training video for uh the Africa Eco Race that he just finished, his training video was on a treadmill, and he lit a cigarette and then he cracked a beer while he was on the treadmill. So I'm like, this guy's my spirit animal. He has to come on the hot podcast.
SPEAKER_04He's gotta be on the show.
SPEAKER_03But to put the rubber to the road, he's he can't come on the podcast right now because he's riding back from the Africa eco race on his bike through Mauritania and Morocco and all the way up to Sweden on his bike. So as you do, a certified badass, to be sure.
SPEAKER_04It's a bit like the uh races to places that Lyndon Poskett did, right? He's like he rode his bike and did the races, and then yeah, that's cool, very cool.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, very cool. So a diverse group of people, but some important stories, important lessons that we can all learn from, and some awesome fun from a certified badass.
SPEAKER_04Nice. Let's go up and talk about a bit of cannonball news. And I'd like to I'd like to focus specifically on apps. So, what is the name of the app?
SPEAKER_03I'm not really sure. I think I call it the GPS checkpoint rally app.
SPEAKER_04Checkpoint rally app.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I guess. Very good. Yeah, yeah. And uh the updates are up. So if you're someone who uses the app for your own rally, make sure that your competitors update the app. The Android app is regrettably updated. And the iOS one is updated also. You know, just so you guys know, that I've already had two alerts from Firebase, which is the background app that runs Android, with two critical errors. And they're not our fault. So I just hate to say it, but the iOS is just so much more stable.
SPEAKER_04So before we before we jump off that, it really makes sense. Take your 12-year-old's iPhone. Yeah, just keep it for the week when you come to our get an get it get an old iPhone. It doesn't have to be super fancy or fast, it just needs to have the stable platform of an iOS. What do you say? Something anything from a 12 up would probably be good to run it.
SPEAKER_03My recommendation, more importantly, is anything with a mag safe charging, because when you're riding through weather, if you have the cable plugged in to its butt, uh, if water intrudes into the butthole, it will it will have an aneurysm and will say, Hey, there's water in your butthole. I'm gonna stop charging.
SPEAKER_04I'm not enjoying this colonic. Please remove the cable.
SPEAKER_03Please remove it. But, anyways, so that's that's the the the balance is finding an older one that has MagSafe charging and get yourself a MagSafe charger. And and and just so writers know, that replaces speaking of Africa Eco Race and Dakar and all these big fancy rallies, they have to rent a very expensive piece of hardware that sits. Sorry, my real estate agents text me. Uh, he'll be all right. That sits on your on your navigation tower, and you have to rent that. It's very expensive, right? Yeah, so our solution is just get an iPhone and run our app, and it's a lot better than going to a checkpoint and taking your freaking picture with a freaking tree, and then I have to verify that you are actually there. Believe me, it's worth the small investment. But, anyways, I digress. I hope all that makes sense. And then we did some improvements for the tracker junkies. Essentially, you can see where everyone is, you can see the age of the GPS fix. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Age of the writer?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, age of the GPS fix. If it's one, if it's in real time or one minute old or 10 minutes old. Uh and the reason why that is, if someone hasn't moved in a while, you know, Lyndon Poskett's parents really hit this point home. If you're sitting at home and your spouse is being a dumbass and they're doing wheelies through the Moab desert and their dot hasn't moved on the screen in a while, and you're like, is my dumbass spouse in a ditch or has broken their leg? Like, I don't know, Iron Man did.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Um, just say he never stopped, just to be clear.
SPEAKER_03That's true. That's true. Yeah. You can see if the age of the fix is old and he's just he or she is out of cell phone reception, and that's the per purpose of it. But, anyways, and you can also click on the public leaderboard and see everyone's checkpoints. So whether you're a competitor, pro tip competitor, you can see if Gus Smith Gusserfin has completed X checkpoint or Y checkpoint or has chosen to bypass it, or if, you know, uh Samantha is going for the extreme checkpoint or is going for the first to arrive. So as a competitor, you can uh you can utilize that that that resource as well. So we're really proud of those improvements.
SPEAKER_04I have a question for you. So for someone looking at that, so is there a is there a ledger on there that tells you that there's a key that tells you what the age is? There is what the colors mean.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's red, yellow, and gray. It's one minute over five or 10 minutes, and then beyond 10 minutes, it goes gray. And then actually now you can click on the dot. Ah, there's more, dear listener. If you click on the dot, it will tell you the writer's name, the writer's number. I was hoping to have speed over the ground and maximum speed, but we're not going to get to it this year. Uh, my my programmer who's in um Argentina is busy. But next year we'll have that information there.
SPEAKER_04Okay, cool. That's really good. As long as that doesn't incriminate the guilty.
SPEAKER_03This is all AI generated, uh, including this podcast.
SPEAKER_04Including the podcast. We are not real.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And if you're an attorney, you know, go jump off of a cliff right now. Do it right now. Run. Don't stop. Run. Keep running. Jump off the cliff. Do us all a favor. Bye-bye.
SPEAKER_04You know, uh one of my one of my friends from Florida, Chris, he's a uh he's an attorney and he gave me the best attorney joke. He said, Do you know why when they bury attorneys, they bury them ten feet as opposed to six feet down? No. Because deep down, they're really good people. No, they're not.

SPEAKER_05Hey Cannonballers, thanks for subscribing to our podcast. We appreciate it. If you're not a cheap Canadian and want to buy us a coffee, head on over to buymeacoffee.com. Or better yet, buy us a case of sweet asscraft IPA. We'll list it on patreon.com. Links are in the show notes. Now, back to the riveting podcast in progress.
SPEAKER_03Let's talk about some new signups. Let's do it, and let's let you do it so I don't muck it up.
SPEAKER_04Well, there's no guarantee I will muck it up either, but I'll give it a whirl. Here we go. All right, so this is kind of cool. So right now we have to talk about the two different rallies, and I imagine that in the near future we're gonna be talking about three, but let's just go with the Americas. 2026 Americas, Bush from Pembroke Pines, Florida, on his T7.
SPEAKER_03And that's Carrie's friend. Uh he is a subject of the next podcast. So him and Carrie in true cannonball spirit, these guys. So he left from Bush, left from Pembroke Pines, where where we used to live. Yeah. And he rode all the way up to Carrie's in North Carolina. And then the two of them rode all the way to the Arctic Ocean. They went to the wrong spot of the Arctic Ocean. They went to Prudhoe Bay. But uh they should have gone to Tuck Tech Tuck. But I won't hold it against them.
SPEAKER_04No, we won't hold it against them.
SPEAKER_03No, we won't. But they went on T7s, they did it, they have. A great story to tell. They have some lessons, some encouragement. So we're looking forward to having Carrie on. But yeah, that's Carrie's buddy. So uh he's a mile crusher class, and uh we're thankful to have him. So welcome.
SPEAKER_04Very cool. All right, wait list number eight. Wow, the wait list. Racking up there. And that is Michael Waller from Draper, Virginia, on his BMW 1200R. And he is riding for Stop Soldier Suicide and the Til Valhalla project.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and that's awesome. And we are happy to support all those causes, of course. About 50% of our riders are either uh active or retired or uh a first responder or retired first responder. So we're we're we're really happy to embrace embrace that community, of course. And uh I talked to uh Michael and he's welcome to join us, but the only issue is that we're running out of discounted Hilton hotel rooms because part of the program is you sign up, you pay your fee, and then you immediately have access to the rally notice page. And on the rally notice page, you have links to Hilton. Thank you, Hilton, uh, for giving us these great these great discounts. And uh we're running out of those. So there are two solutions. The first solution is go to our Facebook community and just go on and say, hey, I'm not a weirdo and I'm not a creep, or I am a weirdo and a creep. Uh I'm looking for a roommate. And I'm sure some people are sitting on hotel rooms that they're on their own, but you're just crashing in them. You know, it's a cannonball, dude. So, you know, you show up, you you know, take the road off of you, have a beer with us, and then you just crash. So that's the one solution is find a roommate. Uh, and that's good for both parties because you save a bunch of money. And the second option is you can call the hotel and get a non-discounted rate. Or uh the third option is uh you can find a hotel nearby and just make sure you are at the starting grid before your start time. That's the only prerequisite.
SPEAKER_04All right, cool. It's really cool that if you think about it, is that this party is booking an entire hotel, right? That's a lot of bikes, that's a lot of riders.
SPEAKER_03It's gonna be awesome, man, to have 50 hotel rooms booked. And yeah, you know what, I've learned a lot of lessons as an organizer, and I'm actually having trouble with the Baja route because you know, I don't want to have little haciendas for everyone where everyone's scrambling. I like to have big hotels. And for Americas and Europe moving forward, I want to have groups of hotels. So when we run out of discounted rooms, there's a you know, super eight across the street, or there's you know, a Ramada across the street. So not to make it more freaking challenging, but I I've learned now to have uh more opportunity for more riders. The bigger the group, I think, the better. So that's the lessons um that I'm applying to the the future rallies.
SPEAKER_04Cool. Very good. Yeah, it's amazing how much we're learning in all this in the planning of these things. It's like uh so much. Right, hey, you know, maybe you could write a book about that, Aaron.
SPEAKER_03No one wants to read that book. Yeah. Self-help, you know. Self-help. Yeah, that's it. That's the backlash. Lessons I have learned while doing yoga and planning hotel trips, volume six.
SPEAKER_04Dude, that was the I'm gonna write that book. You just you just blew the title. No, I'm gonna have to change the title now.
SPEAKER_03You can have volume seven.
SPEAKER_04Volume seven. Here we go. Speaking of seven, 2027 Europe. Let's talk about those new signups. How about that? Let's do it. All right. So these guys are from Denmark, so I may have to take this in uh in Swedish and then I'll come back and nail it in English, okay?
SPEAKER_03Let's do it.
SPEAKER_04Let's do it. Thomas Jörgensen from Team Vikings Mid Gs or Dom er Fron. Rock Skilde Denmark Danmark. Han er poor Hans Vistrom 650. Rene Bu from Teen Vikings Team Vikings Mid Gia P. S. Oxo from Sheppenham, Danmark. I'll take it in English. Here we go.
SPEAKER_03Brian called the name for you, buddy. The only thing I caught was Vstrom 650. That's the only thing I caught.
SPEAKER_04Okay, let's go. Alright. Thomas Jurgenson from this is a cool name. Vikings with GPS. It's pretty good. And uh that's from uh Roskilde, Denmark, on his V Strom 650 and uh Rene Boo. Bo in English. Bo is B-O. Uh in uh in this part of the world it's pronounced Boo. Uh from team Vikings with GPS, and he is from Copenhagen, Denmark. So having fun. Loving it.
SPEAKER_03And I think they're both in Mile Crusher class. I'm not sure. I know maybe one of them is in pro class. So in 27, we are fully in implementing you gotta pay the wing nut fee to be in the uh pro class. And uh well, the reason I did that to also is to separate the the wing nuts from the reasonable people. Like you gotta pay to play the tax, the wing nut tax. Pay the wing nut tax. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So Is there anyone in do you have anyone in is like if you have to bring sconjure someone's face up when you think about how you came up with that name? Is there anyone who comes up right away for you?
SPEAKER_03It's actually not my my term. It's Andy. Andy went on our group chat and said, Okay, wing nuts, I've I've signed up. And I'm like, he's right, they're a bunch of wing nuts. Like these are my people, right? So yeah. So, but in my mind, it's like Captain Chaos or Skidmore on his 650, or it's Hunter, or it's you know, Carrie with his steamed glasses pulling into the Portofino, spitting blood because he made a wrong turn because he was about to be first to arrive. Like these are my people, man. These are my wing nuts, right? So I want to have a small fee to not just click a box for the sake of it, but pay a fee. So, you know, put your money where your mouth is.
SPEAKER_04If you want to put your money where your mouth is.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, if you want to go for first to arrive, there's a there's a small fee.
SPEAKER_04What's coming up in the next episode, Aaron?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we we teased it. Carrie's coming on and he's gonna be telling about all the details, all the nitty-gritty, the packing, what worked, what didn't work, the bike, what broke, you know. Uh, and uh Carrie's talking about his trip uh with his buddy all the way up to the Arctic Ocean, even though he went to the wrong spot in the Arctic Ocean. Um and uh I'm also going to try to ask him about his 2025 experience because I I realize now that we haven't had that, you know, debrief, as it were. Uh, and I'd like to talk to him about what his plans are for 2026. Yeah, that's the next episode.
SPEAKER_04If there's any strategy change based on because he's done one now, so it's a question of as if he's gonna change his strategy, or we'll now that we have more information coming in on the app, see if that plays in as well.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and I actually feel bad for uh Captain Chaos. So I hope he listens once in a while, which I think he does because he uh he gave me a a case of IPAs when I dropped off his motorcycle. Nice. Um he ripped into one of the days hotels like on fire, man. His wheels were melted like an F1 car, and he took off again, and he didn't know that someone else had already got actually it was this this douchebag. We'll call him, we'll call him poison pill. He just came direct and got skipped all of it. Yeah, yeah. So, anyways, and he didn't know that. But now that people know, you can utilize the tracking page and see what's what's going on with all the riders. So you can see if someone's taking that away. I will say, uh before we we criticize things too much, is that I will never design a route again that is not very linear. So if you are a very strong rider like Captain Chaos, which this year he's calling himself the Stig, which is awesome. I love that. Uh if you are a very strong rider that he is, I don't care if some old dude is just going direct to the hotel, you're gonna wheelie past that guy anyways, right? Right. So so I've solved that problem. So I kind of this is kind of my apology, is that uh I've recognized what happened and uh as my dog gets up. Hey Taylor. And uh Well done.
SPEAKER_04Well done, sir.
SPEAKER_03Oh, hi. So I've uh I I've I've recognized the shortcoming in manipulating the route so it's not so linear because of someone who may decide whether maliciously or accidentally to go to direct to the hotel.
SPEAKER_04Got it. Are you gonna have something? I just thought about that, on the app. So I mean, that's a big like once that comes off the board, that might change someone's strategy immediately. And if they aren't looking for that information, is that gonna be like, could you make it so? I mean, I realize your guy's busy, your programmer's busy and that, but like first to arrive ward off the table or awarded, does that pop up? Is that a way to does that show up? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So two things happen, which is the only actual you make a really good point, uh, is that the only communication I ever made officially in the whole 2025 rally was announcing when that was taken off the table. Yeah. Because I just wanted people to slow down or I wanted people to change their strategies.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So it will happen in two ways. It will happen with a push notification in your rally app, and it will come across the unofficial uh WeChat group. Not WeChat uh uh uh WhatsApp. WhatsApp. We're talking about China, WeChat. Uh yeah, so I absolutely push that information out so people slow down, or they just go for extreme checkpoint, or maybe they maybe they try something else. But yes, I I absolutely push that in that information out.
SPEAKER_04Okay, good. That's really good. All right. And is there anything else that you'd like to throw in there into our you know, our our episode that we thought was gonna be like, I don't know, 10 minutes?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, our very short episode. Yeah. If anyone's listening, I'm not sure. But uh yeah, we've got uh awesome straight from my heart, an original blues murder ballot. And it's called Cheap 38, and you can really understand where my mind is.
SPEAKER_04I'm I haven't heard it yet, but I'm I'm I'm a little I'm a little frightened. Cheap 38 murder blues blues murder ballad. I love it. Yeah, it's a murder ballot. Nice. And with that, sir, if you have nothing else, I say we should roll the outro.
SPEAKER_07Engine running didn't get far to the shaking in the rain. Something broke inside my brain, just all the same words.
